The Promise of Perth: Some Delectable Side Trips

The Western Australia capital of Perth offers so much to the holiday maker. There are historical monuments, great shopping and dining and nightlife all in a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. But to get the most out of your Perth Holiday, you need to get out of the city and pay a visit to some of the enchanting nearby attractions. Here's the skivvy on three of those delights: Sunset Coast, Swan Valley and Rottnest Island

One of the joys of visiting Perth is the proximity of some fine beaches to the city centre. The most luminous beach area is known as the Sunset Coast, a long strip of clean sand.

The whole area is perfect for swimming, walking and cycling, as well as al fresco dining or just relaxing in beach front cafes. As the name suggests, a special time of day to enjoy this area is sunset, when you can view the sun dipping down into the Indian Ocean in a blaze of orange. It makes for the perfect romantic moment.

Among the beaches of choice for safe swimming are Cottesloe Beach, Swanbourne Beach, which is a nudist beach, and City Beach, North Beach, and Sorrento Beach, which are popular family beaches.

Another great Perth side trip is to Swan Valley, especially for wine buffs. Just 20 minutes from downtown Perth, Swan Valley is one of Western Australia's oldest wine producing regions and home to over 40 vineyards. Many have been in the same families for generations since the founders arrived from Europe.

Wine buffs will be particularly intrigued by the singular, fortified wines produced here. These include Muscats, Ports and some liqueur wines offered direct from the cellar door.

If beer is your tipple, you can visit the several boutique and micro breweries in the region. More than 20 locally brewed beers are on offer including ales and stout. Other than the many imbibing options, Swan Valley also offers a number of great restaurants.

Nature lovers will enjoy a visit to Swan Valley's Whiteman Park, a conservation area covering more than 4000 hectares of protected bushland and wetland. Flora in the the park includes Banksias, Melaleucas, Wattles and Grass Trees.

Another treat for nature lovers is the small island of Rottnest, accessible via a short ferry trip from Perth City, Fremantle or Hillarys. It's home to the small marsupials known as Quokka.

Known locally as "Rotto", Rottnest Island has a chequered history having been used as a prison colony, farm, governor's residence and military training zone over the years. No cars are allowed on the island but it can get busy with locals especially during school holidays.

Other than relaxing and enjoying nature, Rottnest Island is also a great place for activities such as cycling, swimming, sunbathing, and especially, snorkelling and scuba diving. The waters are clean and the seabed is home to coral reefs and shipwrecks.

Making Perth your base to explore Western Australia is a smart move. For one thing it has great transport options and is packed with things to do and places to go. You've also got a grand choice of Perth city hotels including the The New Esplanade Hotel and the Parmelia Hilton Perth.

About the Author: Richard Greaves has over 20 years experience in the travel industry and writes for Cheaper than Hotels. Cheaper Than Hotels offers Perth City hotels as The New Esplanade Hotel and Parmelia Hilton Perth.

Top Five Attractions To See On An Australian Vacation

It can be a challenge to come up with a list of the top five attractions in a country that's as big and diverse as Australia. If you have visited the "Land Down Under" before, you may have your own suggestions. Although, if you have not yet visited Australia, the following places will give you a good start, they include man-made and natural wonders, dramatic scenery, beautiful beaches and Aborigine culture.

Great Barrier Reef

Off the eastern coast of Australia lies one of the world's greatest natural wonders. The reef's statistics are impressive, it is around 1200 miles long, and is home to around 1,500 varieties of fish and around 400 species of coral. You may also be lucky enough to see manatees, sharks, and turtles as well as humpback whales that give birth during the winter months.

There are several ways to see the reef. Many companies offer cruises - lasting from several hours to a full day, and you can also sleep on the reef aboard a 1890's sailing boat. Virtually every cruise boat also offers the chance to see the reef by diving, an opportunity not to be missed, even if you are new to diving. Also, many visitors to the reef cannot resist mailing postcards from Australia's only floating post office, anchored about 45 miles offshore from Port Douglas.

Sydney Opera House

One of the most recognizable and striking buildings in the world, Sydney's famous opera house was designed by the Danish architect Jorn Utzon. Even if you do not like opera, the building is worth visiting, it is actually a major center for the performing arts where you can see not only opera, but classical music, dance and rock concerts. And there are free performances outside the building on Sunday afternoons.

Sydney Opera House does resemble the billowing sails of a ship, quite appropriate, as the building lies alongside one of the world's most beautiful harbors. Not far from the Opera House is the area of Sydney known as Circular Quay, a bustling area of shops, bars and restaurants. And from Circular Quay, you can easily catch a bus or ferry to almost any other part of the city, the Sydney Harbor Bridge, Royal Botanic Gardens and the historic Rocks district, the oldest part of the city.

The Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is Australia's playground. Beautiful white sandy beaches line the coast for 40 miles, backed by high-rise apartments, luxury hotels, shops, casinos and restaurants. The area also boasts several theme parks such as Sea World and Movie World, as well as around 40 golf courses.

The closest big city to the Gold Coast area is Brisbane, capital of Queensland. It's a friendly laid back kind of a place, offering a wide range of shopping and restaurants. But if you really want to escape from the crowds on the Gold Coast beaches, explore some of the small islands in nearby Moreton Bay.

The Outback (Ayers Rock and Alice Springs)

Many visitors to Australia come just to see the famous Outback - one of the last truly unspoiled areas in the world. It's difficult to comprehend the size of the Outback, it covers an estimated 2.5 million square miles. The Outback is not all desert, the northern part boasts high mountains, deep gorges and spectacular waterfalls. Driving across the Outback is an unforgettable experience, although you should always carry essentials such as extra water and fuel, spare tires, and perhaps a satellite phone

The unofficial capital of the Outback is the town of Alice Springs, made famous by the book and movie A Town like Alice. Alice Springs makes a good base to explore the area as well as to shop for Aborigine souvenirs. Within easy reach of Alice is the huge monolith once known as Ayers Rock, now known by its Aborigine name of Uluru. The rock is impressive at any time of day, but if you have the chance, try to be there at sunset.

Darwin and Kakadu National Park

Darwin is about as far north as you can go in Australia, in fact the city is closer to parts of Asia than to many parts of Australia, and has quite an oriental feel to it.

Within easy reach of Darwin are several areas of natural beauty, including Australia's largest national park, Kakadu. The park covers around 6,000 square miles, and offers varied landscapes ranging from wetlands to dramatic sandstone escarpments. Over 200 species of birds and around 75 species of reptile can be seen here.

Kakadu is still under Aborigine control and is one of the few places where their traditional way of life is still practiced. You can see their art on display at the park's cultural center and at various rock-art sites, and if you are lucky, you may glimpse the Aborigines themselves.

Holidays In Sardinia

Sardinia is an island nestled between Africa to the south, Corsica to the north, Italy to the east and Spain to the west. The east coast shores are lapped by the Tyrrhenian Sea and the west coast by the Mediterranean ocean. Why would you chose to go on holiday to Sardinia instead of mainland Italy or indeed any of the more popular Mediterranean destinations?

Sardinia is pretty easy to get for a holiday with airports in Cagliari (the capital), Olbia and Alghero, Alghero being one of th most popular holiday destinations on the island as well as being one of the most beautiful towns on the island.

Sardinia is one of those rare holiday places to find, an un-spoilt territory with beautiful scenery, stunning beaches and great facilities that attracts hordes of Italian tourists each year and lesser numbers of British and Germans but has managed to keep its integrity and culture and not succumb to the temptation to build monstrous high rise hotel blocks, all clamouring to reach the sun. Perfect for family holidays.

Sardinia is a traditional place where locals still go about their daily business without too much interference from tourists on holiday. Many holiday resorts close down for the winter, not so Sardinia. The winter months see business very much as usual with the fishing boats still coming in and going out daily and the shepherds still tending their flocks in the mountains.

Sardinia receives more sunshine than anywhere else in Italy, reputedly 300 days per year so it's easy to see why life goes on as usual for the residents of Sardinia, nearly everyday is like summer. So no matter what time of year you chose to visit Sardinia for your holiday the weather should always be good.

The beaches in Sardinia are stunning, stretches of majestic white sand meeting crystal clear blue green water, clean and tranquil, perfect for a long beach holiday. The beaches of Sardinia can get busy in peak holiday times but go out of peak time, even as late as June and you'll be lucky to find more than ten people on the beach for company. Most beaches have a little beach café or two alongside offering very good food, beer or coffee at very reasonable prices. These Sardinian beach cafes have usually been family run for years and over the period of a two weeks holiday you will find yourself becoming more and more acquainted with the owners. Such is the way of life in Sardinia, every one is so hospitable and welcoming it's easy to get accepted into their lives, like all islanders they thirst for contact with the outside world.

Scattered across the island are hundreds of ancient Nuraghi, the pre-historic dwellings of the ancient Sardinians, these make an interesting diversion from a day at the beach or shopping during your holiday.

In the north-west of Sardinia are the famous caves of Capo Caccia. These caves run deep into the cliffs to the north of Alghero and can be accessed via a boat trip or by means of a flight of stairs with over 700 steps to the bottom. Guided tours of the caves are run every hour, you can either choose to pick the tour boat up in Alghero or you can drive to the headland and takes the steps down to the caves.

Restaurants in Sardinia specialise in a wide number of dishes, fish, lamb and cheese are three Sardinian specialities but it's also possible to find really good pasta and pizza restaurants in all towns.

To get the real feel for Sardinia it's wise to hire a car for a few days and drive inland where the country is very hilly and mountainous but the roads are good and signposted well. Sardinian drivers are pretty good and courteous so even the most in-experienced of foreign drivers should be ok.

There are so many beautiful places that are still relatively un-touched by the outside world in Sardinia. You really should consider Sardinia as a holiday destination, there is plenty to see and do for all the family, even the kids. The beaches are clean and the people extremely friendly. The food is excellent and the transport network is good.

Oh yes, the sun nearly always shines as well.

MY VACATION CHOICE : TURTLE ISLAND, FIJI

A Guide to Snorkeling and Scuba Diving in Fiji

Fiji is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful countries in the world. This tiny island nation in the South Pacific boasts rugged mountains, beaches fringed with palm trees, blue lagoons and an almost perfect climate. Beyond that, it is the underwater scenery that attracts thousands of visitors every year; Fiji has become one of the most popular scuba diving destinations in the world.

Although it is a small country roughly about the size of the state of New Jersey, the 300 or so islands that comprise Fiji cover a huge area - around 40,000 square miles of ocean. The many reefs are largely unspoiled and intact, and Fiji's government has ensured that pollution and overfishing don't threaten the reefs. The country's traditional land tenure system also helps to protect tribal waters and ensure they are free from pollution and misuse.

Fiji is known as the soft coral capital of the world, due to the amount and variety of coral that can be found in the surrounding waters. In addition to enjoying the reefs themselves, divers can also observe marine life - turtle, dolphin, barracuda, manta ray and shark, as well as an estimated 35 different species of fish. Snorkeling and diving can be enjoyed in the clear waters year round, and visibility often exceeds 30 yards.

Fiji has a well established diving industry, and many resorts specialize in diving accommodations. Some other resorts include diving as part of the daily activity program. Most diving operators offer a course for beginners, making Fiji a great place to get a taste for the diving bug. Some dive operators offer courses and training in foreign languages, so you can likely take a course in your native tongue. If you are looking for the best diving deal, cheaper rates tend to be available January through March.

Snorkeling is also popular in Fiji's clear waters. Nearly all of the larger resorts offer snorkeling and have equipment for rent. The islands of Fiji have many places where snorkeling is possible from the shore, although you should only attempt this at high tide in some locations. Some diving boats will take snorkelers out to more distant reefs if they have room on the boat.

So where should you dive in Fiji? There is no shortage of sites to choose from; they range from well known and spectacular sites to sites that are virtually unheard of and unexplored. If you want the ultimate diving experience, you can even live aboard a dive boat for a week or so - a week on board one of these boats will cost from around $2,500 per person.

One of the most popular dive areas is the sea around the Mamanuca Islands - if you dive here, you won't have the waters to yourself. The coral reefs here have intriguing names such as the Pinnacle and the Circus. The formations here consist of both hard and soft coral and the Malolo Barrier Reef ensures generally calm waters - although the sea outside the barrier reef can often be rough.

Another diving area worth visiting is the area off Taveuni. The names of the reefs alone will have you wanting to go. Reef formations here have such colorful names as the Rainbow Reef, the Great White Wall, the Yellow Grotto and the Purple Wall. Diving in this area has to be timed according to the tides, because of the strong currents in the Somosomo Strait. If you are looking for sleep accommodations somewhere close to the diving action, the Garden Island Resort is the closest dive base to this area.

Beqa (pronounced Benga) Island was once known as the Mecca of Pacific Diving, and despite some damage from storms, it remains a popular destination. The lagoon at Beqa is enclosed by one of the largest barrier reefs in the world, and contains diving sites with names such as Caesar's Rocks, Surgeon's Alley and Frigate Pass. The protective lagoon ensures year-round water temperatures of 80F and gentle currents.

One of the most spectacular diving areas in the waters around Beqa is known as the Coral Gardens - a mass of colorful coral which attracts an amazing variety of sea life. You can also see the well-preserved wreck of a Taiwanese fishing boat, the TASU 2 which was deliberately sunk in about 75 feet of water in an area known as the Yanuca Shallows.
Fiji really does live up to its reputation as a major destination for diving and snorkeling. With so many world-class sites to choose from, your biggest problem may be deciding on which one to visit.

But when a doctor prescribes a vacation... it enlightens your stress, your worries, your tenses and your whole body comes into a relaxation mode when you are on vacation. Talk about going to yoga and meditation... almost the same impact.

LATEST FINDINGS

The best part of taking a vacation is you do not have to be physically be at the vacation location to enjoy it.... Sounds crazy, right!!!!

Yes, I was amazed and shocked too with that statement. Check this out - Latest findings encouraged individuals to take a vacation in a virtual world if they can't afford one in the reality world. It helps to a certain extend to relax and enjoy. If you take a 5 minute vacation a day in the reality world, studies found that it is much better than taking vitamins and tonics! Of course the impact of taking a real vacation is much more greater... Funny, right!

If I told this to my grandparents... they would laugh, saying young people today thinks their whole world is surrounded by internet, computer etc.

But whatever the facts and studies shows, it is obvious that vacation is an essential part of our life. I know there are a lot of people out there who are chasing the corporate dreams and are always busy making money in many ways.

Fun in Phuket: Luxury Thailand Summer Trips

Summer is low season in Thailand, but this means that it's a great time to visit the country if you're looking for special offers on hotels, including free nights and free upgrades (both on a hotel room and for a meal plan) and also no crowds.

Phuket, which has also been named "The Pearl of Thailand", is regularly voted as one of the world's top holiday destinations. Lying just off the southwest coast, and surrounded by the warm, blue, tropical waters of the Andaman Sea, Phuket is Thailand's largest island. It is home to around 200,000 people as well as a transient tourist population.

Though tourism is now a major industry on the island, it was originally tin that brought the area to the attention of the world, and the capital Phuket Town, is still a major port, exporting tin ore, rubber, timber and seafood to the rest of the world.

The rapid growth in tourism has led to the quick development of beach resorts, but tranquil spots are not hard to find, especially when there's always a boat waiting to take you to Phuket's offshore islets, where visitors often find themselves completely alone.

In contrast to the many white sandy beaches, such as Mai Khao, Nai Yang and Pansea, the bustling night markets are well worthy of a visit; just make sure you get your haggling skills up to scratch so that you can bag yourself a bargain!

Thailand has a monsoon season which runs from May to October; when the climate is still hot there are frequent torrential downpours. Whilst the idea of rain may put some people off, others actually enjoy the tropical torrents which are unleashed from the skies. There's nothing quite like sitting under a veranda, as the heavy raindrops drum down on the roof, and enjoying the wonderful sounds and refreshing smells that the rainy season brings. And unlike rain in the UK, tropical storms don't last for long; it's never long before the sun comes out and the ground quickly dries off again.

With Phuket holidays, there are several great luxury resorts and hotels to stay in, for example Bayan Tree Phuket, a deluxe resort with a tranquil setting which is ideal for honeymooners, or those looking for a relaxing and rejuvenating holiday. Cape Panwa, an excellent first class hotel, has good facilities and a peaceful location, and the Amanpuri resort offers azure waters and palm shaded gardens. The fabulous resorts of Pattaya (just 1.5 hours drive from Bangkok) and Hua Hin on the Gulf of Siam are also recommended destinations if you'd like to see a different part of the country.

So remember, summer is a great time to visit Thailand, and especially Phuket. If you're after a great value holiday, with fewer tourists to compete with, if you want to dive, play golf, visit a spa, or just relax on one of the many beautiful beaches, you won't regret a trip to "The pearl of Thailand".

How to Plan a Great Walt Disney Vacation

A Walt Disney vacation can be absolutely wonderful, but hard on your wallet if you do not do some research and planning early. In this article, I would like to share a little insight on how you can save hundreds of dollars on your next trip and at the same time have a great Walt Disney World vacation.

First, book your trip in advance. You will no doubt have to pay more if all holiday preparations are made at the last minute. If you are planning to go during peak season such as between Christmas and New Year, booking one year in advance is never a problem. Otherwise, six to nine months will not deprive you of getting the best rooms that you desire at the best rates. If you are flexible on your vacation dates, you choose to go at a time when Disney offers Value Rates. These are the least expensive. Food can be very costly at Disney theme park. Do not overspend on meals. If you like table-service meals, try lunch since the menus tend to be less expensive than dinner. Whenever possible, eat outside the park for dinner.

Staying at Disney World Resort can help to save you some time while on vacation and let you and your family enjoy more of the park. This is because you do not have to spend so much time traveling back and forth to your hotel which results in shortened park enjoyment time as most families with younger children especially have trouble getting everyone rounded up early in the morning. As a Disney resort guest, you can take advantage of the extra time to visit the attractions that are way too crowded during normal park hours. Planning your day inside the park is a strategic effort. The easiest way to plan your Walt Disney vacation is to select the appropriate days you plan to visit parks and shows. Study the theme park map before you get to it. Nothing wastes time like wandering around not sure where you are or where you want to go next. Of course, you do not want the whole family to rush around during the whole day just to get to all the rides either. Thus, plan with some buffer time in-between so movement from one attraction to another is not a stressful experience.

Staying at Disney resorts not only helps to save you money and time, but your sanity as well. As a resort guest, you do not have to worry about the transportation which brings you to and back from parks. You need not feel stress that you have missed the shuttle and have to wait a half hour for the next. You will feel more relaxed and have more freedom to choose the time you want to leave. Pick appropriate days to visit the attractions in the parks. It will be a bonus if you have extra time.

With some advanced planning and predetermined Disney park visitation strategies, you and your family can experience a great Walt Disney vacation with excellent deals, less stress and fatigue.

Phuket Thailand - The Pearl of Andaman

Phuket, known as the pearl of Andaman Sea, is the biggest island of Thailand. It is a province located in the southern part of the country and has many fascinating attractions that lure people around the world to visit. Because of beautiful beaches and sea, wonderful nightlife and nice weather, Phuket becomes one of the top places in Thailand that travelers choose to go, and of course, when they once visit there, they cannot wait to be there again and again.

It is not hard to get to Phuket. If you choose to go there by car, there are almost 900 kilometers from Bangkok to Phuket to drive and may take 8-9 hours totally. However, most people choose to fly there which takes no more than 1 hour and a half from Bangkok and the air fare is not expensive. Thai Airways and other low-cost airlines can serve you with several flights a day from many destinations.

The Phuket airport is a bit far from the popular beaches and well-known hotels. After you reach the island by plane, you can find a lot of services which can take you to your hotel cheap and easily. These services include taxi cars, airport limousines, and service vans waiting you outside the airport. Hotels and other accommodations are not hard to find and mostly their prices are really cheap. You can find luxurious hotels along the popular beaches or some easy home-stays near the communities or department stores. As I mentioned, Phuket is one of the top tourist attractions in Thailand. Even though there are a very large number of hotels and lodgings in Phuket, I recommend you to book a hotel earlier if you go there in the festival time or public holiday period and you will not regret doing that definitely.

Some well-known beaches that you cannot miss are Patong beach, Karon beach and Kata beach. You cannot imagine how beautiful they are. Also, there are a lot of activities along the beaches, you may sunbathe or swim in the sea. If you like exciting activities, you can play parachute or rent a surfboard. You may book a boat tour to the near islands such as Khai islands, Phi Phi islands and Racha islands, and go diving. Tons of beautiful coral reefs and fish are waiting for you.

One of other activities that you can't definitely miss is watching sunset at Laem Prom Thep. This spot is named for the most beautiful sunset place in Thailand and you will believe it. If you like old buildings and nice architectures, you can also travel to the Phuket city which is located inside the island, a lot of good and tasty food is there. It is another good way for traveling in Phuket if you don't like crowded tourists.

Nightlife in Thailand is very famous especially in Phuket. You can find clubs, bars and restaurants everywhere. These are just parts of what Phuket is and you need to experience them by yourselves. You may not want to go back to your country.

The Best Summer Vacation Destination For Couples

When you think of summer vacations, generally you think of families playing on the beach and a nice warm climate. However, it isn't just families who love to get away - sometimes couples need a nice holiday to enjoy all that life has to offer too. So where should you go if you are looking to enjoy a nice romantic holiday with the one that you love?

The Best Destinations for Couples

When looking for the best destination for your romantic summer vacation, there are a number of things to take into account. Everybody sees love and romance differently and so before you rush in and book anything, you first need to know what romantic means to both you and your partner.

One particularly good option that you should consider is Barbados. There is nothing nicer than lying on a beach enjoying the tropical climate and cuddling up to the one you love. It is perfect for couples because it doesn't have as many families around and that allows you to enjoy the peace and quiet. The best thing about Barbados is its setting and you really cannot find anywhere more beautiful and tranquil - the perfect romantic setting.

Another extremely romantic destination is Tahiti. It has often been otherwise known as the most beautiful island in the world. Situated in the Pacific Ocean, you really will get plenty of chance to enjoy a romantic vacation on the island. There is a large choice of restaurants and themed activities designed especially for couples too so you will also be able to take part in things as well as just relaxing on the beach.

If you would prefer to experience a romantic city break then Paris is definitely the place for you. Well known as the city of Romance, Paris is not a tropical place to visit but it is certainly worth considering if you want to experience a unique romantic break away. Paris is definitely better suited to those couples looking to experience a little culture rather than a hot, beach holiday.

Finally the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania are another really good romantic location. By travelling to the Pocono Mountains you get the chance to escape your daily life and spend one on one time with the person who means the most to you in life. They are particularly good to visit in the winter and they do provide a really intimate setting.

Overall there are a number of options open to couples when it comes to romantic trips. The main thing of course is that you will be spending quality time with your loved one.
